Finding Faith: Mount Carmel Church combats food deserts with mobile grocery store
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Mount Carmel Church in Indianapolis is addressing food deserts with its innovative mobile community grocery store, bringing fresh produce directly to underserved neighborhoods. Valerie Morrison and Lamar Campbell from Mt. Carmel Church discussed the initiative with “Life.Style.Live!” Host Felicia Michelle.
The mobile grocery store, operated by Mount Carmel Church, provides fresh fruits and vegetables to needy communities, accepting EBT as payment to ensure accessibility for all.
“It’s been amazing watching so many people being blessed by the market and being able to get those fresh choices,” Valerie Morrison said.
The mobile grocery store offers a traditional shopping experience, with a layout similar to regular stores, featuring produce and other essentials like diapers.
Customers are encouraged to request items they need, and the store strives to meet these demands by collaborating with urban farmers and sourcing from their farm at Mount Carmel Church. The initiative provides groceries and serves as a form of ministry, allowing church members to engage with the community and address their needs. Valerie noted that the store’s prices are comparable to those of larger retailers, ensuring customer affordability.
The mobile grocery store exemplifies Mount Carmel Church’s commitment to community service, offering a practical solution to food insecurity while fostering connections with residents.
