National Weather Service confirms EF-2 tornado in Bartholomew County

Devastating storm and tornado damage – 3/20/2025

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The National Weather Service (NWS) on Thursday confirmed an EF-2 tornado touched down in Bartholomew County during Wednesday night’s storms.

This is the first tornado in Bartholomew County since Nov. 15, 2005.

According to the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF-2 tornadoes have wind speed estimates of 111-135 mph and can cause considerable damage to well-built structures.

The tornado had a peak wind of 112 mph, according to the NWS. No deaths or injuries were reported.

The NWS provided the following summary:

The tornado began near Interstate 65 in southern Bartholomew County and continued northeast to near Hartsville before disappearing. Damage was nearly continuous along this path, with damage most in the EF-0 and EF-1 categories. However, there were two areas of more intense damage consistent with a low-end EF-2 category tornado, and max wind speeds of 112 mph. Damage at both locations consisted of well-built metal farm buildings that had collapsed walls and roofs. Debris at both locations was lofted and thrown anywhere from a quarter to one half-mile to the north and northeast. Most county roads where the tornado crossed had several utility poles broken. There were also small metal high transmission towers twisted and bent. However, these were small and not the heavier metal structures. There were also wooden double poles alongside that had no damage. Thus, ratings here were lowered to EF-1.
