Storms, at least 3 tornadoes damage around Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Multiple counties in Indiana experienced significant damage Wednesday nighht from thunderstorms and at least three tornadoes, according to reports.

Bartholomew County

Thunderstorm wind and possible tornado damage to buildings and power lines reported on State Road 9 south of State Road 46 southeast of Columbus, and on State Road 46 near Hartsville.

The National Weather Service on Thursday determined a tornado with winds up to 112 mph hit at 8:44 p.m. Wednesday.

Carroll County

Cass County

The Cass County Emergency Management Agency is reporting damage at the Logansport/Cass County Airport, including hangar doors blown in and broken windows.

Clinton County

Thunderstorm winds blew over a semitruck on Interstate 65 between the 156-mile marker and the 157-mile marker.

Fulton and Miami counties

Members of Fulton and Miami counties’ Emergency Management Agency were out first thing Thursday morning surveying damage from Wednesday night’s severe weather and reported tornado. Johnson County

Reports of damage are coming in after a storm brought high winds to Johnson County on Wednesday night, the Daily Journal reported. In Franklin, damage was reported in the area of the Franklin Skate Rink, near Commerce Drive and U.S. 31. A storage building immediately to the south of the rink, and on the same property, lost part of its roof, said Joshua Snyder, fire chief.

Lake County

The Gary city government said Thursday that residents reported the sighting of a funnel cloud near West 21st Avenue and Hendricks Street in Gary on Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service on Thursday afternoon confirmed it was one of two tornadoes in northwest Indiana. The other hit the town of Highland.

One woman was stable when taken to a hospital. No other injured people were found, authorities said.

Multiple homes and businesses have reported significant wind damage, with flooding as well as numerous trees and limbs down throughout the affected area. Emergency response teams are on-site, actively assisting residents who have been impacted by the storm. 

The city’s General Services teams are diligently working to clear fallen branches and debris from streets and public areas in the affected neighborhoods. For downed power lines, residents should exercise extreme caution and call NIPSCO directly at (800) 464-7726. The City of Gary is working closely with other local officials and agencies to provide support to families who have been impacted by this event.
