Tornado and storm warnings filled night in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — No additional severe weather was expected after 10 p.m. Wednesday in central Indiana, although one tornado watch remained in effect in southern Indiana.

The watch was issued until midnight for parts of Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky until midnight. Indiana counties in that watch area are Clark, Crawford, Dubois, Floyd, Gibson, Harison, Orange, Perry, Pike, Posey, Scott, Spencer, Vanderburgh, Warrick and Washington.

A severe thunderstorm watch that goes until 1 a.m. Thursday includes the Indianapolis area and Fort Wayne. Counties in the watch area are Adams, Allen, Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, DeKalb, Elkhart, Fayette, Franklin, Fulton, Grant, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Howard, Huntington, Jackson, Jay, Jennings, Johnson, Kosiusko, LaGrange, Lawrence, La Porte, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Miami, Monroe, Morgan, Noble, Ohio, Pulaski, Randolph, Ripley, Rush, Shelby, St. Joseph, Starke, Steuben, Switzerland, Tipton, Union, Wabash, White, Wells, White and Whitley.

Significant damage reports

  • Bartholomew County: Thunderstorm wind and possible tornado damage to buildings and power lines reported on State Road 9 south of State Road 46 southeast of Columbus, and on State Road 46 near Hartsville.
  • Carroll County: In Delphi, multiple trees down with power lines. One apartment building with a tree on it. One carport flipped. A few electrical fires throughout Delphi with structure endangerment. One transfer power unit exploded. Some other structures and vehicles in the county had trees fall on them.
  • Cass County: Hanger doors blown in and windows broken at Logansport/Cass County Airport.
  • Clinton County: Thunderstorm winds blew over semitruck on Interstate 65 between mile markers 156 and 157.
  • Lake County: Branches down. Garage collapsed. Roof damage. Power pole damage.

At 5:28 p.m. CT, severe thunderstorms capable of producing a tornado were located along a line extending from the Illinois communities of Homewood to Stegerto near Beecher, moving northeast at 55 mph. Radar indicated rotation. These dangerous storms will be near the Indiana communities of Dyer, Highland, East Chicago, Griffith and St. John around 5:35 p.m. CT, and Gary around 5:40 p.m. CT.

From National Weather Service at Indianapolis: Strong to severe storms over Illinois will be reaching Indiana shortly. Damaging winds, quarter size hail, and isolated tornadoes will all be possible in these storms. Stay weather aware this evening and have multiple ways to get warnings.

From Storm Track 8: Several severe storms are knocking on Indiana’s door. They’ll progress into the state over the next 1 or 2 hours. Area circled is best chance for isolated tornadoes in the next couple of hours. Threat does extend eastward through central Indiana, where the risk is lower.

From the National Weather Service at Indianapolis: Elevated dust is causing a brownish tint to the sky from Mexico to east Texas. Strong to severe storms in Illinois are expected to move into Indiana late this afternoon and early evening, sweeping east. All severe weather modes possible.
