INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – March is recognized as Poison Prevention Awareness Month, with the third week specifically designated as Pet Poison Prevention Week.

Our curious pets have a knack for finding trouble, often coming into contact with household items that could be dangerous or even deadly to them.

Every year, the Pet Poison Helpline and ASPCA’s Pet Poison Control Center receive thousands of calls from worried pet owners whose furry friends have ingested harmful substances. These organizations offer invaluable resources, including 24/7 access to veterinary toxicologists and poison control experts to guide in emergencies.

If you suspect your pet has consumed something toxic, immediately contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency animal hospital. In some cases, observation may suffice, but in urgent situations, swift action can be lifesaving.

If your pet gets into something you can call the Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) or ASPCA Pet Poison Control (888-426-4435). Though these services come with a fee, their benefits far outweigh the cost. Experts can quickly assess the level of danger, provide accurate toxicology information, and issue a case number for direct consultation with your veterinarian—saving valuable time in an emergency. They also offer follow-up support at no additional charge.
