Fever’s DeWanna Bonner seeks to bring leadership presence
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Fever introduced another former WNBA champion to their team on Monday.
DeWanna Bonner is a six-time All-Star and a two-time WNBA champion.
She rejoins Stephanie White, who coached her the last two seasons with the Connecticut Sun.
She also will get to be teammates with Caitlin Clark, which she can’t wait for.
“I can’t be more excited to step onto the court with Caitlin,” Bonner said. “We actually had a great workout this morning and I just think we fed well off each other. So, I’m just here to hopefully give my leadership advice. I don’t think I need to push her to be any type of player that she isn’t already.”
Clark is just as excited to have Bonner on the team as well. She praised Bonner’s leadership and her ability to push her teammates to the next level.
“That’s exactly what you want,” Clark said. “You want your teammates to be just as competitive as you are, so I think training camp’s going to be really fun.”
“That’s going to push all of us to get better when you can see a vet like that come in here and want to get better every single day still,” Clark said. “That’s inspiring. That motivates you to get better too.”
Bonner and the Sun squared off against the Fever in the playoffs last year. Bonner was impressed by the Fever’s fight in that series.
Bonner said that in order for this team to be great, Boston has to be great. She said has to be the best center in the league. Boston told her that she wants to be that and she wants to work towards that.
“I just feel like she can be very dominant,” Bonner said. “She has another gear in her that no one has seen yet and I’m hoping that I can help pull it out of her and she has one of the best years of her career.”
Bonner averaged 15 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game last season.
She is fourth all-time in scoring in WNBA history and third among active players with 7,482 points.
She has made the playoffs in 14 of her 15 WNBA seasons and has won two WNBA titles.
The Fever begin their 2025 campaign on May 17 at home against the Sky.
