The Excel Center assists adults in earning high school diplomas, inspiring others to follow
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Excel Center, a tuition-free, public charter high school for adults, has helped thousands of adults get their high school diploma.
Now, an Indy woman will join her mother on that list.
“It feels amazing, very relieving,” said Summer Ramos. “It was a very eye-opening moment that if I just keep my mind on my goal and just keep fighting for it, I will get it, even it doesn’t matter the time limit, just a matter is how hard you fight for it.”
Ramos’ accomplishment comes after watching her mom, Denae Gilbert, go through the program when Ramos was 11 years old.
That was one of the reasons why I went back, so I can show to her to never give up that she couldn’t achieve her goals,” Gilbert said.
Both of them agree that they would not be where they are had it not been for The Excel Center.
“It gave me a community the teachers there,” Ramos said. “There wasn’t one teacher who was there for the money. They were all there for us, and if they could tell when we were having a bad day, and they would help us in any way they can, they were always there today.”
“The teachers were great,” Gilbert said. “Gave me enough confidence to succeed, knowing that I can succeed and pass my class, even though I struggled on math, but they helped me face that fear.” Gilbert added.
