Indianapolis airport showcases artists with disabilities
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis International Airport for a third year is putting the spotlight on artists celebrating creativity and inclusion.
The airport is hosting a 30-day art exhibit featuring of over 100 artists living with disabilities. More than 70 pieces, from painting to sculptures, are displayed in the Civic Plaza at the airport.
Jeff Uhey is director of operations for children adult resource services and the chairman of the Ability Indiana board of directors at Indiana Association of Rehabilitation Facilities. He said of the artists, “For them to actually be able to put in on display. The airport is really the gateway to the world or at least this airport is and some of their art is actually world-class.”
The nonprofit Indiana Association of Rehabilitation Facilities advocates for people with disabilities and aims to support artists. Uhey says he’s excited that the hard work that the artists have put in is appreciated. “I hope that people who find something today, that they reach out, they find who that artist is, they talk with them, they find out what actually inspired them to make that pieces.”
“You can support them in so many different ways. You can purchase a piece of art from them or find out if there’s things they need or connections they need to display their art at other places,” Uhey said.
Artists Stephanie Summers and Andie Nannet worked on a quilted group piece with a few other artists. They sewed for the first time, and helped pick out the colors.
“And did more designs. How long did it take? Three weeks,” Summers said.
“I like it. What did you do? The flowers,” Nannet said in reply.
Organizers say they hope to continue growing the event in the future to feature even more artists.
