Historic Day of Service: Sorority fights hunger in Noblesville
NOBLESVILLE (WISH) — The Alpha Gamma Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through acts of service at the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank in Noblesville, Indiana.
The event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., brought volunteers together to sort and distribute food for local families in need, achieving a record-breaking impact for the food bank.
Volunteers from the chapter, joined by community members and members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, worked tirelessly to organize and distribute over 7,000 pounds of food, including 5,295 pounds of turkeys and hamburgers and over 1,880 pounds of apples and oranges.
The day marked the largest single-day total in the 15-year history of the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank. This monumental effort supported 26 local food pantries.
“Hamilton County is known for its wealth, but what many don’t realize is that there are pockets of poverty. The fact that we served 26 food pantries today highlights the significant need in our community,” Georgia Clark, of the Alpha Gamma Mu Omega Chapter, said.
The food bank, which is typically closed on Mondays, made a special exception to host the event, allowing volunteers to maximize their impact. This year’s effort followed their successful donation drive last year, building on the chapter’s commitment to fighting food insecurity.
“This morning’s work reflects the power of service, collaboration, and love for the community,” said the chapter’s representative. “Together with Omega Psi Phi, we demonstrated that the AKAs and Ques can achieve remarkable things.”
