Universal Ministries honors local leaders at annual Black History Awards
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A long-standing Indianapolis tradition continued Sunday as the Universal Ministries Worldwide Assembly recognized local leaders making a difference in the community.
The 17th Annual Citywide Black History Month Awards Service and Celebration took place at Universal Ministries Worldwide Assembly, 1927 E. 32nd St. Each year, the church highlights individuals who have had a positive impact in media, law, politics, health and wellness, public safety, and music.

This year’s honorees included:
- State Sen. LaKeisha Jackson (D-34)
- IMPD Sgt. William Young
- James McMillian
- Nathaniel Trudalle
- Dominique Raspberry-Battles
- David Girton
Senior Pastor Bishop Anthony Boyd Sr. says the event is about more than just handing out awards, it’s about recognizing those who are doing the work to uplift the community.
“We as a church can collaborate with those who are already making an impact, and this is our way of saying ‘thank you,’” Boyd said.
Universal Ministries has been hosting this event for 17 years, continuing its commitment to celebrating those who serve and inspire others in Indianapolis.
