Strong storms moving in tonight, cooler air follows | March 19, 2025

TONIGHT

Thunderstorms will move into central Indiana this evening, with the strongest storms expected between 7 PM and midnight. Damaging winds of 50-60 mph are the main threat, though an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, especially west of Indianapolis. A small risk of hail is also present in the strongest storms. Storms should begin weakening as they approach the metro area, likely arriving between 9 PM and midnight with strong winds and heavy rain.

Rainfall amounts will generally be between a quarter and a half-inch, with localized higher totals possible. Even after storms exit, non-thunderstorm winds will remain strong, gusting up to 45 mph at times overnight. Temperatures will drop into the upper 30s by morning as the cold front moves through.

TOMORROW

A much different day compared to the warmth we’ve seen recently. Lingering showers will be around in the morning, and some areas—especially north of Indianapolis—could briefly see rain mix with snow. Any mixed precipitation won’t amount to much, but it’s a reminder that winter isn’t completely done just yet. Skies will remain mostly cloudy throughout the day, with highs only reaching the mid-40s. Winds will continue to be breezy, with northwest gusts up to 30 mph.

TOMORROW NIGHT

Skies will gradually clear overnight as drier air moves in, and temperatures will drop into the upper 20s. With calmer winds and clear skies, we’ll see a widespread freeze across the area, so any early spring plants should be protected.

FRIDAY

Sunshine returns, helping temperatures rebound into the mid-50s. Winds will shift back to the south, picking up slightly in the afternoon. It will still be breezy at times, but nothing like what we’ve seen earlier in the week.

FRIDAY NIGHT

A weak system will pass through the region, bringing an increase in clouds and a small chance for showers. Rain won’t be widespread, but a few scattered showers are possible, particularly in western parts of the state. Temperatures will settle into the low 40s.

SATURDAY

Sunshine returns as high pressure builds back in. It will be slightly cooler than Friday, with highs in the low 50s. Northwest winds will be noticeable but not too strong, with gusts up to 20 mph.

SATURDAY NIGHT

A quiet and chilly night is in store with mostly clear skies. Lows will drop into the low 30s, and winds will become light.

7 DAY FORECAST

Storms move out tonight, leaving behind colder air for Thursday and Friday. Expect a return to calmer, sunnier weather for the weekend, though temperatures will stay a little below normal. Highs will mostly be in the 50s with lows dipping into the 30s at night. Another system could bring rain back late Sunday into Monday, followed by another shot of cool air next week.
