Mom faces felonies after school bus fight; prosecutor to charge more people

Mom charged in Warren Township Schools bus fight

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A mom is being charged with four felonies connected to a fight on a Warren Township Schools bus, and the Marion County prosecutor says more charges for people involved in the fight are coming soon.

Latea Hentz, 36, is charged with criminal confinement, battery, intimidation, and criminal trespass for what happened on March 6. WISHTV.com first reported on the charges earlier Tuesday.

Just before 9 a.m., the school bus stopped at the corner of East 35th Street and Richardt Avenue to pick up students. Court documents show that’s when Latea Hentz got on the bus to confront another student that she claimed was bullying her son. That’s when a fight broke out.

A mom of a student on the bus posted a video to social media of what happened.

From the angle of the video, viewers can’t tell which person is Hentz.

Someone can be heard yelling “beat his [expletive]” over and over as punches fly.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears explained what Hentz is accused of doing. “Got on that bus, a place where they were not supposed to be, and physically attacked another child.”

Court documents said Hentz was joined by her 17-year-old daughter and a son during the attack.

The boy taking the punches ended up with a broken nose and an injured eye.

Mears said it all stemmed from something that happened on the bus a day earlier.

The kid with the broken nose claims Hentz’s son had been making racist jokes toward him.

The Democrat prosecutor said Tuesday, “We understand that kids are going to have disagreements and they’re going to have disputes, but that’s why we have adults to try to work through those issues and work through those problems. That’s why you have teachers, that’s why you have principals, to try to help those kids kind of figure out life and work through some of the challenges that they face, and resorting to violence is not going to solve those problems and oftentimes it makes things 20 times worse.”

Mears told I-Team 8 that his office will be filing more charges for people involved in the fight.

These two individuals also made threatening remarks toward other students on the bus.

“Warren Police and district personnel were immediately contacted and upon arrival began their investigation. Both police and DCS (Department of Child Services) reports have been filed, and all video evidence has been provided to the adult and juvenile prosecutors.

“We are taking all necessary steps to address the situation and provide support to our students who witnessed this incident. The safety and security of our students remains our top priority everyday, and incidents like what occurred today will not be tolerated in the MSD (Metropolitan School District) of Warren Township.”
