Indy mom charged after son’s ‘bully’ beat up on Warren Township school bus
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Formal charges have been filed against an Indianapolis mom accused of boarding a school bus with her two kids and beating up a student she claimed was bullying her son.
Latea Hentz, 36, was charged with criminal confinement, battery resulting in moderate injury, intimidation, and criminal trespass on Tuesday for the incident that unfolded on a Warren Township school bus on March 6.
A probable cause affidavit shared with News 8 says a Warren Township Schools police officer was called to the intersection of 35th Street and Richardt Avenue around 9 a.m. after a bus driver reported there was a physical fight happening on a bus.
When police arrived, they spoke with Hentz and her two children, who said the fight stemmed from an “ongoing bullying situation” involving her son.
Hentz told police a boy, named D.H. in court documents, had been picking on her son, J.K., for several weeks, and it eventually escalated to D.H. smacking her son. The March 6 fight broke out after Hentz boarded the bus with J.K. and her daughter, Z.A., to confront the bully and tell him to leave J.K. alone.
J.K. and D.H. were treated by medics at the scene. While J.K. was cleared, D.H. had a laceration and a swollen left eye. He was later taken to Riley Hospital for Children, where medics determined D.H. also had a fractured nose.
According to the affidavit, D.H. told police that he didn’t know why J.K. and his family ganged up on him. He added that he “sometimes jokes with J.K. but nothing physical.”
After speaking with D.H. and D.H.’s mother, investigators learned that his problems with J.K. started after J.K. made racist comments. His mother added D.H.’s father was Mexican, and the day before the fight, J.K. was making jokes about ICE to him.
D.H. told police he tried telling J.K. to knock it off, and when he walked past him on the bus, “his hand brushed against J.K.” J.K. grabbed D.H., but let go, telling the bus driver he’d been slapped.
Then, on March 6, D.H. said he saw J.K., his sister Z.A., and Hentz board the bus. He heard Z.A. say, “Which one is it?” before J.K. took off his coat and started attacking D.H.
His sister joined the fight, and Hentz approached D.H., saying, “You’re not going to touch my son again!” She then grabbed him by the hair and started hitting him on the head.
Investigators reviewed security camera footage from the school bus, which confirmed D.H.’s statement. The bus driver is also heard telling Hentz “no parents on the bus” moments before the physical fight breaks out. Another woman, later identified as another family member, boarded the bus behind Hentz to record the fight, police say.
J.K., Z.A., and D.H. fight for sometime before Hentz joins in, punching the teen and using expletives to encourage the fight.
After the fight breaks up, J.K. was seen shaking hands with other students as he paces down the aisle.
The bus driver also spoke with police, mentioning that she and Hentz argued over the two boys when she boarded the bus, but did not hear the fight going on on the back of the bus.
She said she “did not remember how many times she called for help on the radio.”
Hentz was not listed as an inmate at the Marion County jail as of noon Tuesday. Prosecutors did not say if the teens face charges.
News 8 reached out to Warren Twp. schools for comment prior to charges being filed. That statement is listed below.
“On the morning of March 6th, an incident occurred on one of our middle school buses when two unauthorized family members, one adult and one juvenile, boarded the bus and physically engaged with an 8th grade student. These two individuals also made threatening remarks toward other students on the bus.
“Warren Police and district personnel were immediately contacted and upon arrival began their investigation. Both police and DCS (Department of Child Services) reports have been filed, and all video evidence has been provided to the adult and juvenile prosecutors.
“We are taking all necessary steps to address the situation and provide support to our students who witnessed this incident. The safety and security of our students remains our top priority everyday, and incidents like what occurred today will not be tolerated in the MSD (Metropolitan School District) of Warren Township.”
