Indianapolis police department hosts open house to encourage women to join the force
INDIANAPOLIS, (WISH) – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is encouraging women to join the force.
IMPD is part of the participant of the 30×30 Initiative.
It’s a nationwide initiative to increase the number of women in police recruit classes to 30% by 2030.
IMPD Assistant Chief, Catherine Cummings, says the event on Saturday is one step closer to reaching that goal.
“Right now, nationwide women make up about 12% of law enforcement,” Cummings said. “We hit that number in the late 80’s or early 90’s and we’ve never really surpassed that. Nobody really seems to know why that is.”
The open house event is called Her Badge Her Impact.
The workshop will allow women to find out what it takes to be an officer.
“You’ll get to talk to women who are on the force currently,” Cummings said. “You can come out and talk to them and ask questions about what their lives are like currently and what their job is like currently. If you’ve ever had a question about the joining the police department you can ask.”
Attendees can get information about the hiring process, training and what the job is actually like.
The event will be taking place at the IMPD Training Academy.
It’s at 901 North Post Road, Door 9.
It will take place on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to Noon.
