AES electricity shut-offs will return in April
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — AES Indiana in mid-April will begin disconnecting customers who are behind on payments, the utility company announced.
Disconnections have been on pause for more than a year because of issues related to a new billing system. Problems included not receiving an electric bill and withdrawing the same payment multiple times.
But a spokesperson for AES told Mirror Indy that the billing system is stable now.
If you’re behind on your electric bill, you might see a disconnection notice from AES by the end of March.
After the first notice, customers have 21 days before their electricity gets disconnected.
Customers who are up to date or on an extended payment plan will not be eligible for disconnection.
A statewide moratorium on disconnections ended March 15.
If you need help making payments, AES has a list of ways to get assistance.
Are you still having problems with your bill?
This isn’t the first time AES has made plans to bring back disconnections.
The utility company originally told customers that disconnections would resume in November 2024, but that didn’t happen. The spokesperson this week said the company only meant disconnections could resume by then — not that they necessarily would.
Back then, AES told Mirror Indy the company’s billing system was “working how we expect it to.”
But some AES customers told Mirror Indy of lingering issues, including not being able to pay their bill.
If you’re still having problems with your bill, you can reach AES’s customer service team at 317-261-8222.
