Golden Apple Award preview: Honoring an inspiring Plainfield educator
PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) – Inside Brentwood Elementary School, Principal Julie Zmijewski’s mission is simple: bring joy to learning. One of the school’s newest teachers has embraced that goal wholeheartedly, leaving a remarkable impression in just one year.
“We have bringing joy to learning here, and she exudes that,” said Zmijewski.
This month’s Golden Apple Award winner has earned a reputation as a rock for her colleagues and a beacon of support for her students. Fellow teacher Brittany Nicora says it’s not about the attention or accolades for this dedicated educator—it all comes from the heart.
“I just know when I come into work every day, I’m going to see her with a big smile, and we’re going to lean on each other for support,” said Nicora. “She wants to deliver the best instruction, the best practices, and the best for her students because that’s what she cares about the most.”
But the story of this month’s winner goes beyond the classroom.
Retired choral director Jonelle Heaton remembers her as a standout leader during her time in the halls of Plainfield schools.
“She was a dance captain in our show choir,” Heaton shared. “She wasn’t afraid to tackle challenges, even when it meant telling her peers what to do and what not to do.”
That passion and determination haven’t gone unnoticed. More than a dozen of her peers, students, and loved ones nominated her for WISH-TV’s Golden Apple Award.
This Thursday, we’ll reveal who she is during a surprise visit that highlights why this deserving educator has captured the hearts of so many.
