Art & Soul Showcase celebrates Black artists at Madam Walker Legacy Center
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indy Arts Council and the Madam Walker Legacy Foundation are teaming up to spotlight Black artists in the city through the Art & Soul Featured Artist Showcase.
The program, now in its 28th year, has helped launch and support the careers of dozens of artists, providing a platform for their work to be seen and celebrated.
This year, two of the featured artists, singer Akili Nimali and visual artist Kierra Ready, joined News 8 on Daybreak to talk about their work and the upcoming showcase.
Bringing joy through art and music
Ready, whose art was displayed in the WISH-TV studio during the show, shared that her inspiration comes from joy and the diverse experiences that shape her.
“I just want people, when they see my art, to feel a sense of joy,” Ready said. “Especially people who look like me.”
Being chosen for this year’s showcase is a major milestone for both artists. Out of 87 applicants, only four were selected.
“It’s definitely validating,” Nimali said. “We’ve been working for years, and to be recognized in this way in our own community, it just hits different.”
Art & Soul Sunday Series and Showcase
The celebration kicks off this Sunday, March 23, with the Art & Soul Sunday Series at the Madam Walker Legacy Center. The event will feature live painting by Ready and an R&B and soul performance by Nimali, accompanied by pianist Ivan, a longtime friend.
“I’ll also be showing off my new merch for the first time,” Nimali added. “It’s going to be a full-circle moment.”
The main Art & Soul Featured Artist Showcase is set for Friday, April 11. Organizers are offering a special deal: Buy one ticket, get one free, now through March 28.
With music, live art, food trucks, and community, the event promises to be a celebration of Black artistry in Indianapolis.
