Adoption and Implementation
The Indiana Science Initiative (ISI) literacy enriched inquiry-based science curricular program is available for adoptionbeginning for the 2011-12 school year. Services and
details included with the program are outlined below.
Online Registration
Schools participating in the program will need participants (teachers and administrators) to use the provided username and password to log in to an online database to register
for summer professional development* for the 2011-12 school year. This will also allow teachers to provide student totals for refurbishment materials and update demographic
information for such things as professional growth point certificates and kits shipment details.
See Professional Development handout for more details about teacher requirements.
Materials Management and Logistics
Schools will receive kits based on a rotation schedule that will be posted in early August. All curricular materials, including refurbishment of materials, will be provided
based on student totals provided online. The only exception would be the science notebooks (composition) that students or schools should provide for the school year.
The ISI materials team is working on two scenarios for material logistics.
Plan is going to be either:
- a regional pick up site near schools; or
- direct shipment
Any change to this plan will result in a system that is more cost effective and less burdensome to schools.
Grade K - 12 week rotation; ship back, refurbish, and ship back out
Grades 1-2 - 9 week rotation; ship back, refurbish, and ship back out
Grades 3-6 - 9 week rotation; set of kits that are "out" in classrooms and a set that is being refurbished
Verification of shipment or drop off must be made before shipment or pick up is made
Grades 7-8 - 12 week rotation; set of kits that are "out" in classrooms and a set that is being refurbished
Verification of shipment or drop off must be made before shipment or pick up is made
How to Adopt ISI
March 15: Letter of Intent on school/district letterhead (
download electronic version)
April 1: Memorandum of Understanding (provided to school after letter of intent is submitted)
- District sign-off
- Purchase kits via textbook reimbursement
- Teacher and administrator participation in PD
- % of students participating (whole school)
- Cost is a maximum cost by grade level per student for the six year cycle.
- Cost covers materials and refurbishment.
- Title IIA funds (state discretionary funds) are being used for the professional development-it is not an additional expense for the schools.
